The Hotel That Brought Luxury Retail to China

The Peninsula Beijing opened in May 1989 as The Palace Hotel, built on Goldfish Lane by the People's Liberation Army General Staff Department and marketed as China's first true luxury hotel at a moment when the category barely existed in the capital. Its arcade did as much to open the country's luxury market as its rooms: Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermès each opened their first mainland China store inside it during the 1990s, years before those brands reached Chinese malls at scale. The Peninsula Hotels took over management in 1996, and the building was renamed twice before settling on The Peninsula Beijing in 2006, after a renovation that modernised it without erasing the history.

Why It Works

We kept this one on the list because its history is not a marketing line: it is documented and genuinely first of its kind, from its 1989 opening as China's first luxury hotel to the Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermès boutiques it hosted before those names meant anything to Chinese shoppers. A 2016 renovation worth roughly US$123 million cut the room count from 525 to 230 and made every remaining room a suite, trading volume for space in a city where most five-star hotels went the other way. Architect K.Y. Cheung's hip-and-gable, glazed-tile roofline still anchors the Wangfujing skyline.

Why This Location

The hotel sits on Goldfish Lane, known locally as Jinyu Hutong, inside the Wangfujing district that has been Beijing's smartest shopping address since the hotel's own arcade helped make it one. The Forbidden City's eastern approaches sit within easy walking distance, and Wangfujing's pedestrian street, with its department stores and snack-food alleys, is on the doorstep rather than a taxi ride away. This is the old imperial core, not Chaoyang's business towers or Daxing's airport corridor, and the location has anchored the address since 1989.

From 525 Rooms to 230 Suites

The defining fact about today's Peninsula Beijing is what it used to be: a 525-room hotel that a roughly US$123 million renovation, completed in 2016, turned into a 230-suite property with every room doubled in size. Public spaces were rebuilt across the same period, and the shift from standard rooms to an all-suite layout put the hotel in a smaller, more deliberate category than its original 1989 scale. The trade is explicit: fewer keys, more space in each one.

A Roofline Built to Match Its Neighbours

Architect K.Y. Cheung gave the building a hip-and-gable roof finished in glazed traditional tiles, the kind of roofline that marks imperial and temple architecture across old Beijing, rather than a glass tower that would have stood out against Wangfujing's low-rise core. The choice reads as context as much as style: a hotel built to sit beside the Forbidden City's own rooflines rather than compete with them.

Before You Book: What 2016 Changed

A guest who remembers the hotel before 2016 will find a different property: smaller in room count, larger in square metres per room, and entirely suites rather than a mix of standard rooms and suites. The arcade and the Wangfujing setting remain the constants, so book this address for the location and the history as much as for any specific room category, since the hotel itself has been rebuilt more than once since 1989.
